We always hear about human trafficking. Yet, somehow, it seems we’ve gone calloused and look at it as something so detached from our reality.

However, somewhere out there, real people are suffering and are going through this exact situation.

They are either forcibly or with consent taken and forced to perform labor or other acts against their own person. The bottom line, they are people whose freedom and rights are trampled on and taken away.

Here are some human trafficking statistics that you might want to know, this will give you an idea on how wide scale the problem is and how many people are actually suffering because of this.

As of 2007, 27 million people are currently serving as slaves in today’s modern world. You would think that slavery has completely been extinguished, unfortunately the data proves otherwise.

Every year, close to 800,000 individuals are smuggled into other countries and this happens worldwide.

Majority of the number comes from the women and children’s sector, each year.

This human trafficking statistics estimates that 161 countries out 192 (according to the United Nations) in the world are involved with human trafficking.

An estimated 30% of these victims will have a chance to encounter health care professionals during their bondage and no one will be able to tell or know that they are victims of such.

In Romania alone, 30, 000 women are declared missing presumed to be victims of human trafficking, according to the International Police.

Fifty percent (50%) or half of what the estimated number of humans being trafficked are all children. Their average age is estimated to be around 12-14 years old and they are mostly going to go into sexual exploitation.

It is estimated that since human trafficking is an organized crime, its revenue runs to approximately 32 billion each year. It is in the industrialized countries that the biggest chunk of slaves or labor servants come from, at around 15.5 million victims..

Individuals under the age 18, make up half of the total number of humans being trafficked.

These facts might seem overwhelming, but this is our reality. People who are trapped in this status are more or less afraid that if they seek for help, their families or loved ones might get hurt. Some are afraid that they will be deported.

These are just some of the human trafficking statistics available today. Each year and in fact, every day, these numbers grow. It would make us feel better if they were slowly decreasing, but unfortunately, they instead increase.

That is why we, each one of us, should take a serious thought on taking small steps to put an end to this ruthless industry.
